A LLANELLI football team is celebrating after being named the best in West Wales.

The Calsonic junior and mini team went to the Welsh Football Trust Awards last week after being nominated for best club in their age group.

But while the team just missed out on being named the best in Wales, they were delighted to ha be crowned the best in the region.

Team coach Alun Thomas said: "We didn't end up winning but we were one of the five finalists for the whole of Wales which is a great achievement.

"It's not just a handful of people. From the children who get involved through to the mums and dads and the grandparents — everyone has a part to play, and that's what the award is for. It's recognition for everyone and I think it's fantastic."

Mr Thomas said it was interesting to hear other clubs' points of views at the event.

"It was quite inspiring to hear other people's stories from their clubs all across Wales," he said.

And he said it was great to recognise how much the club had grown in the past few years.

"We've gone from about 30 or 40 children to more than 200 and have age groups all the way through," he said.

"It's great, and it doesn't stop there."
