Schools tackle Scarlets sessions

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 19:00

RUGBY experts from the Scarlets have delivered skills sessions to more than 300 schoolchildren throughout the Amman Valley.

Pupils from 14 primary schools enjoyed rugby sessions held by development officers from Stradey Park.

The events were part of a school activity and healthy living course being delivered by the region.

They included one-hour sessions at Ammanford's Blaenau Primary School, Ysgol Gynradd Tycroes and at Penygroes County Primary School.

Also involved were schools such as Betws Community Primary School, Cwmllynfell's Cefnbrynbrain Community Primary School and Ammanford's Parcyrhun Community Primary School.

The rugby region's community manager, Justin Lloyd, said: "The teachers and young people of the Amman Valley are really entering into the spirit of our community programme — all 14 schools we approached took up our offer of a skills session.

"They learned a few new skills and fine-tuned a few others. We hope that, with the benefit of our advice and guidance, they continue to enjoy their rugby.

"We're thrilled to get such a positive response from the Amman Valley, because we see it as an important part of our region."

The Scarlets' community activity programme also involves an option of pupils enjoying a healthy eating question and answer session, with players, and a visit from Scarlets mascot Cochyn.

As the Scarlets conclude an exciting move from their historic home of almost 130 years to the high-tech £23 million Parc y Scarlets stadium complex, their community programme is being delivered in conjunction with partner firm Link Telecom.
