Crymych left to fly flag

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 09:00

CRYMYCH of division three west are left to carry the flag for the far west in the Swalec Cup.

The Preselimen sprang a 22-3 win against visitors Birchgrove of division four south west to reach round four and earn a possible home draw against one of the big guns.

Birchgrove had a jumbo-size pack ideally suited to the extremely heavy underfoot conditions, but the North Pembrokeshire eight, including former Wales and Scarlets tight-head John Davies, never gave an inch throughout.

Scrum-half Huw Rees landed a penalty to put the home side ahead early on but the visitors from Swansea drew level before impressive right-wing Noam Devey put Davies over for a try converted by Rees to give Crymych a 10-3 lead at half-time.

Midway through the second period Devey stepped inside the full-back and went in for a try converted by Rees. That all but ended the tie as a serious contest.

A good passing movement culminated in left-wing Osian Griffiths racing 30 yards for a third home try but by then the Preselimen were home and dry.

Crymych will carry the flag after Cardigan of division three went down 14-7 against division two east visitors Llantrisant.

The Cardis were without influential skipper Colin Davies and a number of other regulars, but those on duty put up a brave showing against impressive opponents.

Scrum-half Ian Worgan hoisted two penalties for Llan during the opening 45 minutes and the lead was extended early in the second period when wing Kevin Oliver crossed for a try.

Cardigan responded with a cracking try when right wing Robert Davies released Michael Diggle who put Arwyn Wilson in and the score was converted by fly-half Iestyn Crompton.

Worgan landed a third penalty and the visitors held out for the passage into round four.

In the same competition Aberystwyth bowed out after a 10-0 home defeat at the hands of Bedlinog.

Aberaeron crashed out of the Swalec Plate in round one after going down 11-3 against Llangefni of division one north.

In a wind-affected tie at Parc Drefach, the home side mounted a brave rearguard action but lost by a try and two penalties against one penalty landed by fly-half Llyr Davies.

Aberystwyth University crashed 46-13 at Laugharne while Lampeter travelled to St Clears but the tie was called off before the scheduled kick-off time after a downpour made the pitch unplayable.
